NEWS ETC.

Art and culture in France is heavily concentrated in Paris with its famous museums and exhibitions. Nevertheless, important international art events increasingly take place in the regions. One example of such events is the International Biennale of Design of Saint-Etienne in the Rhone Alpes region. The 4th Biennale just took place in in November 2004 and it has assured its position as an international place of exchange and meeting of young designers that less stresses commerce. Among the thematic exhibitions, Made in Africa was outstanding and this show was simultanously held in Burkina Faso's capital Ouagadougou. An impression of the 3rd and 4th Biennale can be gained from the site of the School of Art & Design Saint-Etienne.

ZAK is the abbrevation of Zeitgenoessische Afrikanische Kunst - Contemporary African Art. ZAK-Galerie is one of the projects of artoz-Galerie, which was founded in 2001 in the Franconian city of Fuerth (Germany) as a joint project of several artists from various countries. The project itself dates back to art projects in this medium-size German city, normally rather known for its machine industry, which started already in the early 1990s. In 2003, artoz-Galerie bought the important collection of contemporary African Art of the German gynaecologist Bernd Kleine-Gunk who spent several years working in African hospitals and at that time started one of the most important European private collections of contemporary African art. An important condition of the sale of his collection had been to make it available on the World Wide Web, for a look at this magnificient collection, click here!
