Christian Huggett was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He lives currently in Nagoya, Japan.
Christian Huggett loved cartoons from an early age - but his mother disapproved of comic books and refused to let them into the house. So Christian snuck off to his friendfs basement where he would read comic books for hours.
When Christian was 16 a professional cartoonist came to stay with the Huggetts for a year. Christian sat next to him and watched him draw. Shortly thereafter Christian published his first cartoons in the high school newspaper.
Huggettfs career blossomed when he came to Japan.
He cartooned for various newspapers - gThe Japan Timesh, gDaily Yomiurih, gChunichih and gChubu Weeklyh. He also drew for gJapanzineh, gAvenuesh and gKellyh magazines.
His one-panel cartoons highlighted the trials and tribulations foreigners face when living in Japan.
Recently Huggett became interested in acrylic painting. To further his drawing skills he studied part-time in London at gThe Slade School of Fine Arth and gCentral St. Martins School of Art and Designh. He also studied cartoon animation at gVancouver Institute of Media Artsh, drawing at gVancouver Film Schoolh and classical drawing at the gAngel Art Academyh in Florence, Italy.
Huggettfs paintings are completely inspirational. Sometimes he sees the completed painting in a dream or he draws the original idea as a doodle.
gIt always surprises me when people see meaning in my paintings,h Huggett said. gSomeone looked at one of my paintings and said, eThatfs exploitation of women!f I thought that was really amusing because I had no idea what the painting was about myself.h
Huggettfs paintings, sometimes called gSchizo-Tribal Arth, have been described as gscary, strange and mysterioush.
Despite offers from buyers, Huggett has never sold any of his artwork. gMy paintings are like my children, gHuggett said,h And I would worry about them too much if they were gone.h
