Francis Marie

Francis Marie was born in 1964 in Le Havre, France. After graduating from the Ecole Regionale des Beaux Arts de Rouen in 1984, he continued his study of art at the Ecole Regionale d'Arts Plastiques de Lille, where he graduated in 1987. In 1990, Francis Marie came to Japan to study woodblock printing under Miki Atsuhito. He also entered Musashino Art University to continue his studies. After having returned to France in 1993, he came back to Japan in 1996 to concentrate on his work as a woodblock printer. Francis Marie's art draws its inspiration from the objects of tribal culture that can be found in ethnographic museums. In the creation of his woodblock prints, a profound transformation of the original objects arises through the interplay of the European's vision of distant peoples' culture with the clear lines and colors of Japanese style woodblock printing and the representation of the tribal objects' distinctive features and shapes.

Francis Marie is a founding member and auditor of Marafiki - Friendship and Art.
